1998 - 2001

1998-2001

A few German students gathered together in April 1998, recognising the lack of activity of German students at the School. Although large in number (approx. 450 at that time) very little has been contributed by them to the overall life at the University. They thought it was time to change this and founded the then called "German Culture Society". The idea of organising events covering current issues related to Germany, quickly gained the support of then director Anthony Giddens, the European Institute, the German Language Centre and a large number of international students who shared a common interest in Germany.

Subsequently they organised the first "German Week" which was a series of public lectures, film screenings and a big Oktoberfest-Party at the end of the week. This very first predecessor to today's German Symposia took place from 27.October to 30. October 1998, hence the branding of our now (in)famous Oktoberfest party.
